Building Immunity

 

  I don't think I've ever met someone who liked getting sick. However, in such a developed world where we live among and interact with people on a daily, it can be difficult to avoid. Not to worry as there are ways to help strengthen the immune system holistically. Our immune systems help to prevent or limit infections. It can distinguish between normal, healthy cells and abnormal, unhealthy ones, sending out special cells and chemicals to combat irregularities. The immune system will even remember defeated bacteria and virus strains to prevent reinfection. Most people probably don't know that majority of the immune system actually resides in the gastrointestinal tract. This is due to the gut microbiome, all of the helpful bacteria that live in the GI tract that help break down food and attack harmful bacteria. 

Extra Info: Staying active, getting fresh air & sunlight, trying to drink a gallon of water each day and eating a proper diet full of vitamins and nutrients will give you the head start you need to fighting illnesses.

   If you have ever had a conversation with me about wellness, intermittent fasting has probably come up. Intermittent fasting is the practice of refraining from eating break-fast at least 16 hours after the previous night's dinner. Many cultures, like the nation of Islam and India, practice intermittent fasting for spiritual or health reasons. It can do many amazing things for the body along with regulating the gut microbiome which helps to build the immune system. Like all major systems in the body, the digestive system and immune system both use energy.

 The way we eat today uses a lot of energy, as most people's bodies are constantly in a state of digestion. You wake up and most likely eat a "hearty" breakfast, may have some fast food for lunch then eat a large 3-course dinner with each meal being just within a few hours of the first. The body is never really given a chance to digest the previous meal before starting the next. This puts stress on the body and takes vital energy that could be used for the immune system. Have you ever gotten sick and had no urge to eat, especially anything heavy? Well, the body has its ways of forcing us to do right by it when it's in need. Intermittent fasting allows the body to rest after digestion of the last meal completes. This allows your body to use extra energy for the immune system - healing of anything that needs it. 

 To use this fasting technique, just simply calculate what would be 16 hours after your dinner and that's when you would break your fast. So, if you eat dinner at 7:00pm then breakfast would be at 11:00am. You should definitely drink water or herbal tea before that time as they do not contain calories and will actually help the body in its morning detoxification process. Also, it is always best to break a fast gently with foods high in water and fiber content: fruits & vegetables. I do not recommend that pregnant nor nursing women fast as this may result in unpleasant feelings like headaches, nausea and lightheadedness.


  This healing tonic may also help give the immune system an extra boost. These natural ingredients have some sort of active constituent that can inhibit microorganism growth, reduce inflammation or help the body expel mucus or phlegm.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar: (organic, raw, unfiltered with The Mother) 1 teaspoon
  • Lime: 1 squeezed
  • Ginger: 4 small, skinned chunks
  • Turmeric: (ground) 1 teaspoon 
  • Honey: (raw, organic, unfiltered) 1 tablespoon (not to be given to children under one year of age)

Add these ingredients to 8oz of hot water and let steep for about 10 minutes. Let cool to a comfortable temperature and drink. (Always consult your primary care physician before starting any type of herbal remedy or practice.)

  In addition, take note of any health harming habits that you partake in. Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, stressful environments and the foods you eat all influence how well your immune system will function. Also, always remember to practice good hygiene: wash hands for at least 20 seconds, bathe regularly, keep a clean living space, etc. And always remember to focus on love and keep those spirits high.
